My driving instructor was absolutely amazing and very supportive throughout my learning. They taught me every single thing step by step and made sure I understood how to drive properly and safely. I was very nervous at first, but their calm and friendly attitude helped me gain confidence. They explained everything clearly and corrected my mistakes in a positive way. Because of their guidance, I felt well prepared and comfortable driving the car. I am very thankful for their patience and dedication, and I highly recommend them to anyone learning to drive. I registered for driver training in the summer of 2015.  As other reviewers have said, there is a mandatory in-class session which comes about 2 months prior to ever getting to be in a car for hands-on learning.  The classroom session is basically a review of material you would need to pass your learner's exam as well as some AMA propaganda to buy into their insurance post "graduation".  I was set up with an East Indian woman for my in-car instruction.  When I was texted regarding a time for my in-car sessions, my instructor was not flexible at all regarding times to meet up.  I was working and a university student and she expected me to be available in the middle of the day which seemed pretty ridiculous.  On our first day she informed me that she had two masters degrees but preferred to teach driving because she "cared about her students".  Before we even began driving she began to look at the package I had bought and informed me that I should really buy the package with more lessons in it (more $$$).  I told her I cannot financially afford that (these lessons were already nearing $1000). When she demonstrated techniques she was extremely curt and did not reiterate anything.  When I began driving I was very nervous and she started yelling at me.  She began verbally berating be throughout the two sessions I attended and telling me I "needed more practice," "needed to be an aggressive driver", and that I absolutely had to sign up for more lessons (she was stuck on this idea after I told her several times I am not in the financial position to do so).  She was literally pulling over the car mid-session to give me a spiel about why I needed to buy more lessons which was wasting instructional time and was not at all helpful to me, especially given that I had told her several times I would not be able to afford these lessons.  When asking about affording the lessons she also began to ask leading questions about who I lived with and what my living situation was like which I found very intrusive and unprofessional.  I also want to mention that throughout our two sessions she kept making reference to "other students" who had over 200 hours of practice time and who were apparently much better than me.  There were other unprofessional moments throughout our lessons, such as when she had me pull into a 7/11 so she could go pee.  I'm sorry but when I am paying $100 for an hour of driving with you - I don't think it's appropriate to take a 10-minute break at 7/11, hold it.  This woman was not interested in teaching in any sense of the word, she was there to collect an easy paycheque for driving around and verbally abusing her students.  During our second (and ultimately final) lesson she had taken 30 seconds to show me how to parallel park.  Actually 30 seconds - I am not exaggerating here.  She was racing through the instructions and when I began to park following her directions she started yelling "no what did I say!?!"  I told her what she had said and that I was following her directions.  She continued to be extremely aggressive and negative.  I became very upset after our second session and returned home in tears.  A family member had to call AMA for me to explain the situation because I was too emotional to do so.  A manager there eventually offered a refund after trying to get me to sign up with a different instructor, I told him I was over the entire experience and did not need the stress.  He made it sound as if this trainer would be reprimanded for her behaviour while in the car, however, over a year later and she is still working there in direct contact with students.  I am extremely disappointed in AMA and would warn others to stay far, far, FAR away from their services. My first daughter took driving lesson with ama during school and had a hard time getting schedule for after school and on weekends. The instructor gave her a grade of 60%. After passing her driving test on her own, she still need to take a refresher course to get her training certificate. What a cash grab. Ama will not give her the training certificate until she get a grade of 75%. My other daughter took her driving lessons with city driving and got her license and certificate right away. I registered at AMA for a 14 hour session but didn't know that the wait time for in-car lesson will be over 2 to 3 months. They only have the schedule of in-class session on-line but not the in-car driver lesson. The arrangement once you registered, after a few days that the driver is the one calling you to ask for the schedule. It's true that the driver is hard to understand when they left a message on the phone. We had a phone tag since the driver only can call you when of course he/she's not on the road. They said that you can schedule the in-car lesson after attending 3 sessions in the classroom but voila! their in-car availability is after 2 months. I was so mad about it since I like to learn driving before the winter comes. I registered for September 2013 classroom, but the drivers availability is November. That is a long wait.The driver I spoke to said that AMA only has few instructors and they all booked up. I decided just to cancel my registration because of that and I got charged $50.00 plus GST for cancellation. The cancellation of the registration won't take effect immediately but after a week according to the AMA customer representative since they can't cancel immediately since it has to go through their accounting department. I demanded for immediate cancellation, though I called in Saturday, but the rep told me that she will request the credit card refund to go through on Monday. I will wait and see if they able to cancel it. I register instead to a driving school that has in-car availability with also good reviews.AMA kept saying that they are always booked because of the quality of their driving lesson, but horrible service. The classes were all right, but the hands-on driving part of this extremely expensive (almost $900) course was horrendous. We had to wait for several months just to get an appointment for the driving portion. At last when the day arrived,  the instructor called my daughter's cell phone number after I asked him several times to contact me through our home number.  He left a message that she never got (hey, she's a kid), and we missed that appointment. The next time the instructor was supposed to come, my daughter couldn't find her driver's license, so he refused to take her and we were charged a fine of something like $75. OK, fine, that's one on us. It happens. Finally the instructor showed up and the stars aligned and my daughter got  behind the wheel and drove. The instructor gave indecipherable directions in very bad English, and finally told her she was a terrible driver (and bear in mind, this *is* a driver training class - she is not supposed to be an expert driver) and made her feel so bad about her driving that I called and requested a different instructor. When I spoke to this instructor, I had a difficult time understanding what he was saying because he, too, could not speak very good English. Whatever, we gave him a shot. He didn't have any availability for three months, though. We waited the three months for her first appointment yesterday. Guess what, the instructor just didn't show up at all, probably because he left a message on her cell phone, which I specifically requested that he NOT do.  After waiting for an hour for the guy to show up for the lesson, I called. He did not answer, so I left a message for him. He never called back. It's stressful enough to learn how to drive when you actually *can* figure out what the instructor is telling a student to do. It did not make for a better experience to then insult the student for not already knowing how to drive. My daughter decided that she never wanted to drive again, and instead would take the bus for the rest of her life.  That is not what I paid almost $1000 (including the fine) to achieve. I do give AMA credit for refunding my money, however, they only refunded $500 of it. So I spent $500 on a driver education class that did nothing except make my daughter afraid to drive. I would rather have spent $500 to have somebody punch me in the gut. It would have been a lot less hassle, and had a less lasting negative impact. Read Less

It was a tradition in my family that when you turn 16 your birthday present was a driver training course -- now it may sound lame, but I was pumped about it!I took my driver education at AMA, and although I am pretty sure it was pricey, I think it was well worth it. The teacher is super easy to understand and he made the topics interesting and sometimes funny.I would recommend that people looking into driver training at least check the website. It has a lot of information and it is a good place to start looking. Read Less
