Highlanders Campsite and Lodge

Cape Town, Western Cape
General Info
Highlanders camp is conveniently situated in the scenic region of Namaqualand on the Cape/Namibia N7 route & is the perfect stopover. It is nestled among the wine farms on the Olifants river, at the foot of the Cedarberg mountain range in the Klawer wine region. The setting is simply stunning! The owner Sparky, has a mass of experience in the hospitality trade as an ex-overland truck driver/guide. He has put this knowledge to good use in his design of the camp, ensuring all camping needs are met.

Highlighlanders Campsites and Lodges is a lovely, small vineyard in the stunning Cederberg region of South Africa. The setting is breathtaking, and the relaxed vibe, combined with a great bar and pool, makes it a great place to unwind. The wine tasting that they offer is a highlight—not only is it well-priced, but it’s also a fantastic way to sample some excellent local wines that are made from grapes at the vineyard. We stayed in the lodges, which were beautifully designed and very comfortable. That said, a few small improvements would make the experience even better: 1. No WiFi: The lack of WiFi onsite and limited phone signal made it tricky to stay connected. While it’s not a dealbreaker, having internet access would have been really useful as this was our first stop after Namibia. 2. Broken Lock: The lock on our lodge door wasn’t working (I think we stayed in Sauvignon Blanc), which felt a bit inconvenient, even though the site itself feels very secure. 3. Hot Water Issues: The water in the lodge took a long time to heat up, which wasn’t ideal and made me conscious of the amount of water being used. 4. No Breakfast: There’s no breakfast available onsite, and given the remote location, it’s worth planning ahead unless you’re set up to cook for yourself at one of the camping facilities. Despite these minor points, I’d definitely stay here again. It’s a wonderful place, and with a few small upgrades, it would be even better. Read Less

A beautiful working vineyard and hospitality grounds. The scenery was spectacular and the perfect setting for a pleasant eve wine tasting amongst friends. The room, pool, grounds, and bar were well designed and laid-out in accordance with the owner’s vision. I had a nice conversation with the owner on the morning of departure. He shared his story of how he came to be the owner; what it looked like when he bought it; his vision and effort to operate the hospitality and farm businesses. It was an inspirational conversation. As I leave I will be cheering for their success and great lifestyle. If you’re looking for a peaceful place to relax, lounge by the pool, and enjoy some wine - this is the place! Read Less

Highly recommend Highlanders. We stayed at the private camp with lush lawns, own covered kitchen and the stand is completely cordoned off with a reed fence for privacy. All facilities are extremely neat and clean and well looked after. Clear blue sparkling pool and stunning braai/bar area. Thanks to Mike for the hospitality. And a special thanks to Marno for the assistance with the ‘trailer trouble’! And a last thanks to Ben who popped in every now and again 🐾 Read Less

Not normally accommodating caravans, we were very warmly welcomed by manager Marnu and owner Mike. Even personally assisted us in setting up our caravan on one of the private sites with the the most beautiful green lawn. All facilities available are spotless and everythig is in perfect working order to the finest detail. Further, all amenities available are of the highest standard and prices probably the best in the region. We even received a discount for staying longer than 2 days. Upon departure we once again received personal assistance from Mike and Marnu. Service excellence to this extent is not easy to come by and I cannot avail a high enough recommendation to this establishment. And the views of the river and vineyards are to die for. Thank you Mike and Marnu. Read Less
