The teaching quality of the instructor I had was fine based on the single lesson I received. I didn’t notice any glaring issues with how that one lesson was delivered. However, everything else about the experience was unacceptable. Availability and scheduling were a serious problem to the point where learning was effectively impossible. I first contacted my instructor, David, on the 5th of December. I am writing this in February, and in that entire time I had one lesson. Lessons were repeatedly postponed, often at short notice, each time for different reasons. I was frequently told, “I’ll let you know when I’m available,” but there was never any follow-up unless I chased repeatedly. If I didn’t nudge, there was no communication at all. On the 8th of January, I was told the instructor had several driving tests which were taking up most of his time and that he would contact me when availability opened up. That follow-up never happened. As of February, I still had not been contacted again or offered any lessons. One lesson in nearly two months is not learning. It is not progress, regardless of how flexible a learner might be. At that pace, you forget more than you learn, and your time and money are effectively wasted. If an instructor or school is overbooked or does not have the capacity to take on new learners, this should be communicated clearly from the start rather than keeping people waiting indefinitely. I have since changed driving schools and have already had more lessons in a single week than I did in almost two months here. The difference was immediate. His patience, courage to believe in my abilities on days when I didn’t do as well as I’d have liked, and his willingness to be flexible when I needed it, are only some of the qualities that made John Johnson the perfect driving instructor for me. As a driver learning to drive in the UK and transitioning from driving an automatic car to learning how to drive a manual car, I needed someone to believe in my capacity to learn. That was John from day 1. He is respectful, has a great sense of humour (I spent most of my lessons laughing), and is incredibly experienced and skilled as an instructor. His feedback was honest and clear, and I left each lesson knowing that John was committed to supporting me to become a safe, competent, confident driver. Before my first test, I was quite nervous but John’s confidence in me gave me the courage and reassurance I needed to take my test. Unfortunately, I failed that first test but John’s response and encouragement was just what I needed. I can’t thank him enough for the grace he showed. I was disappointed and also felt I’d let him down. John said, “You haven’t let me down. Book another test and show them how good you are 😊.” The second time, I passed my test. I highly recommend John to anyone who is considering switching from automatic to manual, learning to drive in the UK, to anyone who needs a calm and professional instructor and to anyone who might need an instructor who will explain without complaining.
