THINK TWICE PLEASE I started lessons with John with around a month and a half till my test. He was quite intense from the get go. I had my test booked in a different area of Scotland - Cumnock - whilst learning in Falkirk/Stirling due to a change of plans & ending up further north. We had planned that John could do my test regardless of area for the pay but also actively seeking cancellations for an area closer to where I am currently based. Sadly no cancellations came, and John agreed that he could definitely take me for my test in Cumnock so long as his hourly rate was covered, being the journey from Falkirk to Cumnock, an hour lesson in Cumnock previous to my test to get used to the area, the test, then an hour journey back up, being approx 4hrs, £160. TEN DAYS previous to my test he was making odd comments during our lessons to the nature of his dad driving for my test. Once a few of these comments were made I asked what he was talking about. He then notified me that he had booked a holiday and was unavailable to take me for my test, and instead his dad would be available and we would have to use back roads to get to my test as we wouldn't be able to drive through Glasgow. His father is not a qualified driving instructor, but would be happy to go as a passenger to allow me to drive Johns car to my test. After research and speaking to an insurance claims director I was notified that I would not be insured to drive Johns car with his father as a passenger, due to the fact his car was insured as an instructors car. His dad would be insured to drive it, but not to be used as a learner driven car with an experienced driver. John was happy for me to break the law, drive uninsured to my test, hoping I didn't get caught by going back roads and not through Glasgow. He was sadly hoping for me not to be aware of this and instead just avoid police detection by not going through Glasgow. When John was notified of this he was rather unhappy and spoke as though I should have been grateful that his dad was willing to take me. He was fully aware I'd be breaking the law and driving without insurance. He then tried to get around this fact by claiming I was never going to drive the car, and instead his dad would just taxi me to my test. Using the car for my test would be legal and covered by insurance as an examiner would be present. This was extremely gutting due to the fact the hours previous to my test were crucial for me getting familiar with the area, with the agreement previously being an hour lesson in the area before my test, which was now defunct as it would be illegal. John gave me an ultimatum before promptly hanging up - be taken by his dad or hire a car. I firmly let him know how disappointed I was in his service, and how utterly unprofessional he is. A side note is also that we would often end lessons with 10 miles in the fuel tank, flashing warnings, with the idea that he wanted the "crud being filtered through"... Does that tell you enough? I passed with no thanks to Johns horrendous planning skills. For someone who is a "full time driving instructor" his diary is rather empty... If you want to be whispered at and told how wonderful someone's life is - go for it. If youre thinking it doesn't matter about the instructor, only the fact you're in a car - HIRE A CAR! No wonder he takes bookings by block only - I doubt most would come back after their first lesson. TLDR Cancelled on me last minute and was going to knowingly have me break the law and possibly be disqualified from driving if caught. AVOID! Read Less

Not impressed with instructors teaching methods. Today witnessed instructor allow his client to bring the vehicle to a halt at the immediate entrance to a street in castlecary and in front of someones drive when a young man's lesson ended. Clearly obstructive and potentially dangerous to other vehicles looking to enter the street. The instructor himself then reversed onto another residents drive to turn and exit the street. No wonder there is so much bad driving on our roads if this is how people are being taught. Read Less

I run Ship Shape in Falkirk and John has taught about 10 of my members over the years. Every single one of them spoke very highly of him. He has a very good 1st time pass rate and that comes down to having years of experience and being a very competent instructor. In 12 years when my wee girl is old enough to drive, then it will be John i will be calling. I don't normally rate businesses on FB and i wouldn't recommend someone unless it was warrantied. You see so many driving instructor cars on the road in Falkirk and not everyone is cut out to be one. I know John is good, so you will be taught to a high standard which will stand you in good stead for after you pass your test. Read Less
