PAS Auto School

Tarrytown, New York
General Info
PAS Auto has been teaching tens of thousands of beginning drivers, especially teenage drivers, for nearly 40 years and supports NHTSA programs. Furthermore, we believe that parents or guardians have an important role to play by not only teaching their teenagers how to drive, but also setting an example as safe and responsible drivers themselves. We are here to complement this important responsibility through the various programs that we offer.

This school should be shut down. The whole program was sketchy at the beginning but it just got worse as we went on. Went for my road test today and I couldn’t take it because they used white out on the date. We had a different teacher almost every week. I didn’t learn anything. The teachers don’t know how to work the cars. Horrible communication, cancelled on us many times. They would tell us that it was cancelled and then they would have class as normal. Instructors for the in class were late every single week and sometimes wouldn’t even show up. We barely got any driving time to ourselves because we were shoved in a small car with 4 other people. I personally only missed a few classes and I made sure I made them up. But for the people who missed more they had a hard time with make ups. The instructor would say they missed class when they didn’t and make them come in for make up classes they didn’t need. One of our teachers decided that our first four weeks of classes were invalid because we didn’t get “enough driving time” but he was the one who was always late and we would always start half an hour late. The in class lecture was garbage and all we would do is watch videos every single week for the entire time. The driving class was garbage and the instructors wouldn’t teach us what we actually needed to be taught. I wanted to get better at parallel parking, I did it once and the instructor never let me do it again. He’d always say maybe next time or that we didn’t have enough time. The instructor that we had toward the end for the longest period of time, 4 classes maybe. He would constantly talk about classical music, how he had 6 phds, and how he danced with every presidents wives. Every single class for the entire time. The drivers ed certificate took over 6 months to get to me and they used white out on the certificate so I couldn’t take the test. We tried calling PAS’s number and it said it was out of service. Go somewhere where you’ll actually learn to drive. One time a kid in one of the other classes wasn’t even late and they left without him. We came back early so the next class was ready a few minutes later and he made them leave early as the kid was walking out of the building and the instructor wouldn’t let them go back for him. One time I called the school to double check if we did or didn’t have class and the instructor we had currently literally picked up the phone and told me we didn’t have class for the exact school and time I asked for. They had class and he was like oh where were you. One time I was driving and I wanted to adjust my seat and the instructor Neil wouldn’t let me pullover and told me “it’s okay no need to pull over I have the wheel” and proceeded to put his hands on the wheel while I tried to adjust my seat. One time we were at an uphill stop and the teacher told the girl who was driving to hit the gas and the break at the same time. One of the instructors would make the whole car come in on Sunday’s to make up classes we didn’t need because he invalidated our first four. Read Less

I cannot comment on the quality of instruction, but they have repeatedly failed to properly schedule classes, to the point that my son was dropped from one class and promised a second. When that second (fall) class was set to start, he was then told that they didn't have a class to accommodate his schedule. We withdrew and requested a refund, and enrolled him in private lessons. They are now marking him as present for classes he is not attending, and the school is asking us to pay again. If it was possible to give this less than a single star, that would be the first thing I would do. When it comes to the classroom, my son is constantly complaining about how someone who is on the older side is always making him look bad in front of the whole class when he doesn't even do anything. Second off, the driving is horrific. A couple of days ago I tried to pick up my son and ask the instructor when the next day he was driving was, and I couldn't even understand a single word that came out of his mouth. On top of this, the cars are old and run down and some of them don't even have a properly functioning gas gauge or transmission. There are a lot of things that this company has to do in order for it to compete with others, and at the rate they are going, they will never get there. Read Less

I contacted PAS auto school for their au pair lessons.  Our au pair is 24 with a valid license from her country but failed my test as well as my husbands test - miserably. After the 1st and 5th lessons the instructor said she was "fine".  She definitely did not drive fine with either my husband or me so we called the instructor to tell him about our experiences (after his evaluation and a few lessons) and he said that was not his experience.  Because of this I decided to go on the 6th and final lesson to find out why.Turns out they drive on only side roads around your neighborhood and surrounding areas and only during day light (I had to specifically request a night time lesson which was not a welcome request).  They are not allowed to go on highways or parkways (which we were not told) and their parallel parking is on side roads behind only one car.  I asked the instructor to have her drive into our small village and parallel between 2 cars and he said that wasn't fair.  I told him to put her on his insurance because this wasn't real life driving.  He said fair enough and had her parallel between 2 cars that could fit an 18 wheeler.  This is not a 16 yr old just learning this is a 24 yr old who told me she was an expert driver who was supposed to be driving my precious 2 yr old.  I explained this to the office and the instructor.  I assumed they catered to this type of driver since they had an au pair package on their website. He had to ask her to slow down three times during the hr and twice she made left turns into the right lane cutting off other cars already in that lane without saying a word to her (I had to tell her that both lanes turn left meaning the other lane has cars also turning left and she needs to stay in the same lane). If I hadn't gone on that final lesson I would have assumed she knew all of this. I also figured I would be told things like having to ask her to slow down three times etc.If you are thinking of paying this school to teach your children please ensure you know what you are getting and be very explicit of what you expect.  For me it was a complete waste of money.  I asked my au pair if SHE felt she learned anything and she replied "yes I learned the roads around the house better".  I could have downloaded her a mapquest app for free for that.
